W3Schools launches app to bring coding lessons anywhere, anytime

W3Schools, one of our members at Innovation Dock, has launched a new mobile app. It’s a gamified way to learn coding, built to fit into people’s everyday lives wherever they are.

Coding that fits into your day

The app lets users choose between five languages - HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python and Java - and write their first line of code about two minutes in.

The team built the app assuming most people would use it on the couch in the evening. Instead, in its first week, people were doing lessons on the bus, in line for coffee, between meetings, and even at 2am. Coding, it turns out, fits into whatever gap in the day you give it.

A bigger response than expected

The response in its first week was bigger than expected: tens of thousands of people got started, building daily streaks and racking up XP through bite-sized lessons and quests.

Feedback has been wide-ranging too - some are learning Python for the first time, others are brushing up on JavaScript or CSS, and several parents have asked whether their kids can use it. They can.

What’s next

The roadmap ahead is clear: less focus on memorizing syntax, more on building judgment and fundamentals - as AI increasingly takes care of the actual typing.
